To use understanding of codes, genre and conventions to create a movie trailer.
You will be creating a trailer for a movie. The genre will be given to you and you will have to take a mystery object and include it as a major part of your trailer.
A movie trailer is designed to advertise a movie and draw audiences into the idea of going to the cinema to watch it (this is where they make the most money, not by streaming it). They are normally no longer than 3 minutes.
Watch the trailer and brainstorm as a class what this trailer includes
Introduction to characters(s)
A quick summary of the plot (without giving things away)
Fast paced changes of shots and scenes
Music to set mood
Potentially a voiceover
The title of the movie
A reminder that every genre shares conventions and codes. They are things that appear in most of these types of movies. E.g. horror uses dark colours to make the audience uncomfortable.
Get into groups of 3-4. Your teacher will spin this wheel for each group to select the genre.
It may be that there are a number of groups doing the same genre but you have to stick to the genre you are given.
Teacher you can decide if the students can spin the wheel more than once. I wouldn't do more than a couple though!
You will need to select TWO items from the junk box. These must appear in your trailer and feature (not just in the background!)
Brainstorm sheet. Fill this as a group.
Yes. However you will need to have it connected to school wi-fi to share the video to a chromebook to edit the video. One phone per group.
Create a Google Slide.
On the first slide answer the question: What is a movie trailer?
Pick a movie trailer of your choice
Create a slide and explain what the movie is that you have chosen.
What genre does it fall into?
How do you know this?
Explain the conventions of the genre you have picked
(what common things does this genre use in film? think: colour, props, camera angles, music....SWAT)
