A large number of chimney sweep children were purchased from their desperately poor parents, this means that they were effectively owned by their boss. As you can imagine, these bosses didn't really treat them well. They were just there to do a job.
The chimney-sweep job was perfect for small children because they could squeeze up the tiny space to clean off lumps of soot, which could lead to a chimney catching fire if they weren't cleaned off. This meant that children as young as three were sent up chimneys to clean them.
The work was hard and led to many injuries. Sometimes children would get stuck up a chimney for hours breathing in the toxic dust. They even had a form of cancer named after them because it was so common for a chimney sweep to die from the disease. Not many chimney sweeps lived long enough to reach their 30's.
