Understanding the Characteristics of a Genre: Documentary
In our skills lessons we have looked at genre and what that means, simply put, genre helps us recognise what type of media we are consuming.
We have also looked at how different genres use different codes and conventions and what effect this has. For the next couple of lessons we will be using this knowledge to analyse a documentary.

Documentaries use real people, real events, and techniques like interviews, narration, statistics, and re-enactments to explore real-world issues. We might recognise a film as a documentary because of the techniques the director has used to create the film.
Elements or Conventions of a Documentary
Elements or Conventions of a Documentary
There are certain things we expect to see in a documentary to be able to place it within that genre.
These include but aren't limited to:
Interviews, presenters & voiceovers
Re-enactments or dramatisations
The use of statistics, facts and anecdotes
