To explore case studies of entrepreneurial people
To investigate the nature of entrepreneurs
Business is one of those areas where people use a lot of jargon.
Your teacher will take you through some slides which include famous entrepreneurs from history and today.
In groups: What is a pitch?
A business pitch is when you present your idea to people who can help make it happen. You might pitch to:
Investors who can provide money to support your idea.
Potential customers who would buy your product or service.
Advocates who can support and promote your idea.
In this case a business owner is pitching an idea to a bunch of investors hoping to get some money and their experience to help their business idea be a success. There are two shows that document this process really well, Shark Tank and Dragons Den.
These videos show how a pitch can be as much about the person selling as it is the product.
Teacher notes: You may want to pause the videos at points to briefly explain jargon e.g. equity, "10% stake in my company" etc. You do not need to watch the whole video. This entrepenur's pitch is successful because:
They make it clear what the product is
They explain the purpose of the product (and its USP- Unique Selling Point)
They explain who the target market is
They explain how it would make money
It is a fun and engaging pitch
Why is this pitch less successful?
Consider:
Presentation style
Target market
The USP
How it would make money
One thing a dragon says at the end is "One of the things that defines an entrepeneur is their ability to get over hurdles" they also mention that it is as much as selling yourself as well as the product. Can you be persuasive?!
You will be working in your table groups (or groups defined by the teacher) to create a pitch for your product. To pick the product your teacher will spin a wheel. Click the wheel below to go to the link.
For your pitch you are presenting your product to the class. You need to convince your class, using persuasive language, that they should buy your product. You will need to:
Explain the product & its purpose
Give a Unique Selling Point (what makes it stand out from competition)
How much it will cost
Who is the target market (consider age, gender, income)
Have some kind of demonstration/description of a scenario involving the product
Present these to your class. You will need to stand together to support each other but you don't all have to speak.
