We are learning that perspectives are shaped by values and beliefs.
Perspective = the way you view the world
Values = what you find most important in life
Beliefs = what you deem to be true e.g. if you are religious but could mean other things e.g. if a person believes National Government is better than Labour, that is a belief.
Values and Beliefs both shape your Perspective.
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a disagreement between two groups of people who live in the same area, Israel is a country in the Middle East, while Palestine is a region nearby. Both Israelis and Palestinians consider this land their home. Israelis and Palestinians have different beliefs, cultures.
Many years ago, both Israelis and Palestinians lived together in this land. But over time, they had disagreements about who should live where. In 1948, Israel became an official country, and this caused conflict and violence because some Palestinians had to leave their homes. Since then, there have been wars and fights between Israelis and Palestinians over who gets to live where and who gets to control certain areas, both sides have religious and historical links to the land and leaving would be giving up on that. Many people have also lost loved ones and friends in this conflict.
This video is good at displaying how the scenario of Israel vs Palestine is not a simple one, as well as the different perspectives involved.
Teacher, make the call about whether to play the whole video as the task does take some time, however the video is interesting. For this task you will need to read different sources as a group and answer the questions on the worksheet.
Teacher you may want to do this as a class task depending on your students i.e. read out the source and answer, section by section. As a historian we are learning that it is important to be able to wonder about things and create questions to research.
