Each of these features is formed by one or more of the processes we have been discussing.
In New Brighton we have a spit. The New Brighton Spit extends from the New Brighton beach, shaped by longshore drift in the vicinity of the Avon Heathcote estuary. Known as Te Kararo Kararo in Māori, it translates to 'place of the chattering birds.'
It was formed by deforestation by early Māori- sediment travelled down the Waimakariri and Ashley rivers and then drifted (hence the name longsure drift) to create the sand bar we see below.
