To understand why people protested against changes to the Treaty of Waitangi principles and how Māori used peaceful protest to stand up for their rights.
In 2024, the government suggested a new law called the Treaty Principles Bill. This law would change how the Treaty of Waitangi is used in New Zealand laws and decisions and some people believed this bill would take away important rights from Māori, especially the promises made in the Treaty.
Te Pāti Māori (a Māori political party) strongly disagreed with the bill.
They said it was unfair and that it ignored the Treaty.
Māori (and pakeha) across the country came together to protest.
People joined hīkoi (marches), performed haka, and even tore up copies of the bill in Parliament to show how upset they were.
