Not as colourful or fun I'm afraid. In fact it's pretty grim.
Child labour in the mines could start from the age of five. The children were expected to go into dark and cramped tunnels to retrieve trolleys of rocks (up to 600kgs!) Shifts in the mines were 12 hours a day, six days a week, which meant that children might not see sunshine for days at a time. It was not uncommon for staff working the mines to be cruel to children. To motivate the children to be fast, they often beat them and punished them if they made mistakes.
A days work will leave you battered and bruised, potentially with ongoing health problems. All for a few cents.
That is if you make it out... many children were killed by the trolleys, rooves caving in and explosions.
Susan Reece, six years of age said 'I have been below six or eight months and I don't like it much. I come here at six in the morning and leave at six at night. When my lamp goes out, or I am hungry, I run home. I haven't been hurt yet.'
