Tasks 1-3 in worksheets.
Here is one of the first maps of Te Waipounamu/ South Island, drawn by Captain James Cook as he sailed around Aotearoa. Imagine how difficult it would have been drawing something from a birds eye view when you were only able to view it from sea level (no Google Earth in those days!)
It looks a little strange don't you think?
Task One
You should be able to spot THREE things Captain Cook got wrong with his map. List these.
Task Two
You can do better. Without tracing, freehand Te Waipounamu as best you can.
None of the "I can't draw!" excuses! This is to test your knowledge so challenge yourself!
Label your map with:
A title
Ōtautahi/Christchurch
The Southern Alps
The Pacific Ocean
This is a map drawn by a Tahitian man named Tupaia. Captain James Cook asked for his help because of his extensive knowledge of the pacific islands. This map was drawn from memory!
Tupaia had navigated around the Pacific frequently and not only knew where islands were, he knew what the ocean was like, what the winds were like, knew the traditions of many Pacific Islanders AND had good relationship with many of them. He was a valuable person for Captain Cook to meet!
Task Three
Draw a map from memory: Our school.
Include as much as you can (trees, seats etc.)
if it helps, start from the classroom you are in and expand the map outwards
