To understand the lasting effects of the Industrial Revolution, focusing on changes to the environment, how people adapted, and how society changed.
Industrial, revolution, environmental, evolution, adaption
In year 9 (if you were at this school) you will have covered the topic of the industrial revolution. You were asked to investigate what life was like for a child during these times.
In your books write what you can remember about the industrial revolution.
What was it?
What happened?
How did it affect society/people?
For your CAAs you will be expected to write between 150 and 250 words on a random topic that they give you. Spin the wheel to find how much you need to write for this task. Try to write in a formal way.
Below are two images to help you write.
The Industrial Revolution, which spanned the late 18th to the early 19th centuries, brought about significant and lasting changes to society, the economy, and the environment. Today's global problems like water and air pollution, loss of biodiversity, destruction of wildlife habitats, and even global warming can be traced back to this time in history.
One of the famous examples often cited in discussions about the environmental impact of industrialisation is the case of the peppered or speckled moth (Biston betularia) in England.
Can you guess how industrial revolution affected the moth breed? Have a look at the moths below.
On the left: original peppered moth. On the right: darker peppered moth.
https://populationeducation.org/understanding-the-unintended-consequences-of-the-industrial-revolution/This is a clear example on how human invention and innovation influences the environment and how those impacts can be unexpected!
Your job is to disguise your moth and hide it in plain sight in this room. Another teacher will be selected to come in as the 'bird' to find as many moths as they can.
The rules are:
You can cut within the lines of the moth but you cannot make it smaller than that.
The moth must be in plain sight not hidden behind or inside something.

In the southern states of America, there were loads of plantations and farms, particularly focused on growing cotton in that warm southern climate. These places heavily leaned on slave labor. As the Industrial Revolution rolled in, the demand for cotton skyrocketed, leading to an even greater reliance on slave labor.
The divide between the north and south became larger- the north valued manufacturing and wages, while the south continued to be highly dependent on the use of slavery.
Most of the world benefited from this slavery . Ultimately this industry led to civil war in America.
The Industrial Revolution drove advances in medicine. It made it easier to produce medical tools like scalpels, microscope lenses, and test tubes faster. With machines, improvements to these tools could be made and sent to doctors more efficiently. Better communication between doctors also helped spread new treatments and cures quickly, leading to improved patient care.
What were the key changes to medicine over these three time periods in Britain?
What were the pros and cons in health over the Industrial Revolution?
